Percutaneous (Percutan) Hair Transplant: A Complete Guide

Percutaneous (Percutan) Hair Transplant: A Complete Guide

The percutaneous (Percutan) technique is a modern refinement of hair transplantation that uses a fine needle to open the recipient channels. Because the needle creates very precise openings without harming neighbouring follicles or damaging scalp tissue, it supports dense, natural-looking results with minimal trauma.

What is the percutaneous technique?

Percutan is a developed way of implanting follicles in which a specialised needle opens micro-channels in the recipient area. The needle’s key strength is placing follicles with high precision while protecting the surrounding follicles and preserving the scalp tissue — which ultimately improves the accuracy of the result.

Who is a candidate?

  • Enough healthy, stable donor follicles.
  • A donor supply sufficient to cover the bald area.
  • Good general health with no chronic or immune disease.
  • A healthy scalp with no contagious or chronic skin conditions.

Before the procedure

Your surgeon examines the scalp, runs preliminary checks, and identifies the cause of shedding, then requests blood tests to confirm your general health and rule out contraindications. A few weeks beforehand he may recommend a serum to stimulate the follicles and a derma-roller to reactivate dormant ones. In the two to three weeks before surgery, avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, alcohol and smoking.

How it is done

The steps mirror a standard transplant: light trimming, drawing the frontal hairline, sterilising and giving local anaesthesia. The surgeon harvests roughly 2,000–3,000 grafts by FUE, keeps them in a preserving solution, then opens ultra-fine openings with the Percutan needle and places the follicles one by one before dressing the scalp.

Recovery

  • Take prescribed medication on time — pain relief, antibiotics, anti-itch.
  • Sleep on your back, propped on pillows, and avoid friction on the treated area to limit swelling.
  • Wash the transplanted hair after two to three days with medical shampoo, then apply the prescribed lotion.
  • Avoid hot water, direct sun and any rubbing; never scratch the scalp.
  • Avoid strenuous activity, sauna and jacuzzi so blood flow to the scalp stays normal.

Results timeline

As with other transplants, results appear gradually: the transplanted hair sheds after about three weeks, regrows from the third month, and the best result shows from the sixth month through 12–18 months. The outcome varies from person to person with follicle strength and healing.
