The Latest Non-Surgical Hair Transplant Methods: 5 Techniques

Many people ask about the latest non-surgical hair transplant methods before committing to treatment. The field keeps advancing: newer tools finish the procedure faster, spare you the pain and wounds of older surgery, and deliver more precise results. Here are the five leading techniques — plus the main non-surgical alternatives.

How transplantation moved away from surgery

The traditional transplant used the strip (FUT) method — trimming the back of the scalp, making a horizontal incision, removing a strip of skin, stitching the wound, and dividing the strip into hundreds of grafts by hand. Modern extraction-based techniques removed the need for that incision. Here is where the science stands today.

1. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

Not the newest, but the technique most others evolved from. Follicles are harvested individually, so the surgeon controls their distribution and preserves donor density, then places them into tiny recipient channels.

2. DHI (Choi implanter pen)

One of the most advanced options. The Choi pen both harvests and implants each follicle without pre-cut channels, protecting the follicle from bending and preserving its growth direction — the key difference between FUE and DHI.

3. Sapphire

Pens tipped with sapphire (blue corundum) open channels as fine as 0.5 mm, removing the need to cut channels by hand. This limits wounds, sharpens the result and speeds the procedure — up to around 7,000 follicles in one session.

4. Micro-FUE

Uses openings as narrow as 0.7 mm — far smaller than the ~1 mm of traditional methods — for greater precision, better density and a finer result.

5. Nano-FUE (fine extraction)

A method rather than a device, used for delicate areas of the head or face — eyebrows, eyelashes, the frontal hairline. The surgeon harvests the very finest follicles from areas of thin hair to keep the result as natural as possible.

Non-surgical alternatives to a transplant

  • ACell + PRP: combines hair stem cells with platelet-rich plasma; injected into the scalp, it strengthens follicles and boosts density and growth.
  • Regenera (micro-cell) therapy: stem cells harvested from your own follicles are multiplied and injected, dividing into many follicles to thicken and regrow hair.
