How Your Head Looks After a Hair Transplant: Growth Stages

Your head changes gradually after a hair transplant — from the first week through the third month — which makes many people anxious or curious about when results show and whether healing is on track. Here’s exactly what happens, step by step.

What happens week by week

  • At first the scalp is very sensitive and swollen, with small red dots or dried pinpoint bleeding where follicles were placed.
  • Scabs form within two to three days — light at first, then thicker, sometimes with itching.
  • Follicles settle after one to two weeks; between day 10 and week three the transplanted hair starts to shed.
  • A soft cap can be worn after 10 days for no more than six hours at a time, in a smooth, comfortable material (not rough cotton) so it doesn’t catch the grafts.
  • As you care for the scalp, the scabs fall away over the first weeks — keep them moisturised with the prescribed lotion so they drop off without moving the follicles.

When do the side effects fade?

Most signs of the procedure fade within about two weeks; anything left is very minor and depends on how well you follow instructions. Beyond a few simple activity limits, no special recovery steps are needed.

Recovery tips

  • Eat well — especially protein — to help the tissue heal quickly.
  • Sleep on your back for two weeks, then on your sides from day 14, to limit swelling.
  • Avoid bad weather, dust, strong sun and exercise for about a month.
  • Avoid anything that raises blood flow above normal — caffeine, alcohol and smoking.
