Hair Transplant Complications and 5 Tips to Avoid Them

Most after-effects of a hair transplant are normal side effects that cause no harm when managed well — and with good scalp care, real complications are easy to avoid. Here’s what they are and how to minimise them.

What is a hair transplant?

A procedure that restores density by moving healthy, stable follicles from dense areas to bald or thinning areas — with minimal surgery or with advanced tools such as direct implantation and implanter pens.

Possible complications (and how to avoid them)

Anaesthesia reactions

An allergic or adverse reaction to anaesthesia is possible in any surgery — avoided by choosing the right type and doing an allergy test beforehand if you’ve never had anaesthesia.

Infection and bleeding

Both are uncommon and not specific to transplants. Avoid them by caring for and cleaning the transplanted hair, staying out of dusty weather, taking prescribed antibiotics on time, and stopping blood thinners for two weeks before and after.

Scalp scarring

Strip (FUT) surgery leaves an expected linear scar hidden by hair; true “complication” scarring comes from damaged follicles that don’t heal properly or from injury. Avoid it with correct aftercare — don’t scratch, pick scabs, or sleep on the grafts for at least three weeks, and keep the scalp clean.

Persistent numbness

Temporary numbness is a normal side effect that resolves within hours; lasting numbness from an accidentally injured nerve is uncommon, and sensation returns eventually.

Tips to avoid complications — with Dr. Sherif Hegazy

5 tips before surgery

  1. Tell your surgeon your full medical history — chronic, autoimmune or skin conditions.
  2. Identify the type and cause of your loss (temporary vs hormonal).
  3. Stop smoking for two weeks — it weakens healing and follicle survival.
  4. Avoid blood-thinning drugs and herbal supplements to prevent bleeding and swelling.
  5. Choose your surgeon carefully — many problems come from inexperience or the wrong technique.

Results

Results take at least four months to start: shedding in the first three weeks continues over the first three months, new growth appears from the fourth month, most of the scalp is covered by the sixth month, ~80% shows by a year, and the final result at one to one-and-a-half years.

The complications are small next to the high success rate — the key is aftercare and an experienced surgeon. Contact the clinic.
