Overly large breasts can cause daily back, neck and shoulder pain and limit activity. Breast reduction surgery removes excess tissue, fat and skin for a lighter, better-proportioned, more comfortable chest. Here’s what to expect.
More than a cosmetic change
Beyond appearance, reduction often brings immediate relief from back and neck strain, skin irritation under the breast, and difficulty exercising or finding clothes that fit.
Are you a candidate?
Good candidates are in general good health and troubled by the size — with pain, skin irritation, activity limits, or a loss of confidence. Signs it’s time include chronic back/neck pain, rashes under the breast, and shoulder grooving from bra straps.
The techniques
The surgeon removes excess glandular tissue and fat and trims excess skin, then reshapes and lifts the breast to a proportionate size, repositioning the nipple as needed. Liposuction may be combined to refine the contour.
Duration and recovery
The procedure takes a few hours under general anaesthetic. Most women return to light activity within one to two weeks and avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks, wearing a support garment throughout.
Safety and risks
It’s a well-established, safe procedure in experienced hands. As with any surgery, possible risks include swelling, bruising, changes in nipple sensation, scarring and — less commonly — infection, all minimised with good technique and aftercare.
Results
The size change is visible immediately; swelling settles over about three months, with the final, balanced result by around six months — along with lasting relief from the physical strain.
