DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) shortens the classic transplant into a single, precise step. Using a Choi implanter pen, each follicle is extracted and placed directly into the scalp without pre-cut channels — giving natural density and tight control over the angle and direction of growth. It is especially strong for the frontal hairline and fine facial areas.
What is the DHI technique?
DHI, or Direct Hair Transplant, uses specialised Choi pens — a type of smart implanter that performs the whole implantation in one action. Unlike the traditional method, where follicles are extracted with forceps and then placed into channels cut with a blade, the DHI pen holds a hollow titanium needle that both takes the follicle and plants it directly. Because no separate channels are opened, it is an excellent choice for the frontal hairline, eyebrows, eyelashes, moustache and beard gaps.
Who is suitable for DHI?
- People in good general health with no uncontrolled chronic conditions.
- Those willing to stop smoking completely and follow pre- and post-op instructions.
- People whose scalp is free of active or contagious disease.
- Those whose loss has not responded to non-surgical hair treatments.
Preparing for DHI
- Your doctor reviews your medical history, identifies the cause of shedding, and defines your cosmetic goal.
- He assesses hair density and estimates the number of grafts based on the bald area.
- Blood tests confirm your general health and rule out contraindications.
- For two weeks before and after, avoid aspirin and other blood thinners, avoid alcohol, and stop smoking.
Step by step
- The surgeon designs the recipient area — scalp or face — with a marking pen.
- The skin is sterilised, local anaesthesia is given, and protective measures are taken.
- Part of the donor area is trimmed and follicles are harvested with the pen.
- Each follicle is implanted directly, with careful attention to the natural angle and direction of growth.
- The scalp is dressed; the procedure averages about six hours, after which you can go home.
Recovery after DHI
- Early discomfort is mild and controlled with simple pain relief.
- Keep the scalp clean and take the prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection.
- Wash the transplanted hair with plain water without touching or rubbing the follicles, using only the products your doctor prescribes.
- Handle any scabs gently — never pick them, to avoid disturbing the grafts or their growth angle.
- Eat well (protein, vegetables, fruit), drink plenty of water, and avoid caffeine for the first three days.
DHI results timeline
- Week 3: follicles settle and stabilise while the transplanted hair sheds.
- Month 3: new hair begins to grow and an early result appears.
- Month 6: growth continues and covers most of the treated area.
- 12–18 months: the final result is clearly visible in most cases.
