Sapphire Hair Transplant: The Refined FUE Technique

Sapphire Hair Transplant: The Refined FUE Technique

The Sapphire technique is a modern refinement of FUE that uses blades tipped with real sapphire crystal to open the recipient channels. The smooth, ultra-fine edge is gentler on the scalp — less tissue trauma, less bleeding, faster healing, and the ability to place follicles closer together for higher density.

What is the Sapphire technique?

A hair transplant happens in two stages. First, follicles are harvested — either by the strip (FUT) method or, more commonly, by individual extraction (FUE). Second, the follicles are implanted into the scalp, which normally requires opening recipient channels by hand with a steel blade.

The Sapphire method replaces the steel blade with one tipped in blue sapphire crystal. This gemstone edge creates the channels in a gentler way that does not damage surrounding tissue, protecting against injury and bleeding, before the harvested follicles are placed and the scalp is dressed.

Advantages of the Sapphire technique

  • Lower risk of inflammation or injury.
  • Less scarring, thanks to the very small incisions.
  • Shorter recovery because of fewer side effects.
  • Smooth, precisely aligned channels.
  • Channels can follow the natural direction of hair growth.
  • Finer, closer channels allow more follicles and greater density.

Before a Sapphire hair transplant

  • Your surgeon reviews your medical history, the cause of your hair loss, and your cosmetic goal.
  • He measures hair density, estimates the grafts needed, and confirms the right technique.
  • Blood tests rule out any condition that would interfere with anaesthesia or surgery.
  • Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin for at least two weeks before and after.
  • Stop smoking completely for two to three weeks so it does not affect the medication.

Recovery after the Sapphire technique

  • Rest during the first week; avoid strenuous activity and sun exposure.
  • Do not wash the transplanted hair for the first three days; afterwards use lukewarm water and medical products.
  • Sleep on your back with two or more pillows to keep the head raised and limit facial swelling.
  • Eat well — protein, vegetables, fruit, dairy — and limit caffeine for the first three days.
  • Moisturise any scabs with the prescribed lotion and never scratch or pick at the scalp.

Sapphire results timeline

Because the channels are so gentle, the scalp heals quickly with little inflammation and results become visible sooner. New hair starts to grow from the third month, and the full result matures one to one-and-a-half years after the transplant.

Cost of a Sapphire hair transplant

Prices vary between clinics and countries and with the number of follicles transplanted. At Dr. Sherif Hegazy’s clinic in Cairo, the Sapphire technique costs up to around USD 2,000 — competitive with, and often well below, prices in the wider region.
