Hair cloning is an emerging approach for severe hair loss and advanced genetic baldness. The idea is to take follicles from the donor area, multiply them in the lab to produce far more transplantable follicles, and implant them where the hair is lost. It is genuinely promising — but still experimental and not yet approved for routine use.
What is hair cloning?
Hair cloning aims to treat heavy shedding and late-stage baldness in both men and women. Follicles are taken from the donor area, cloned to produce stem cells and a larger number of transplantable follicles in the lab, and then implanted so new hair grows as in other transplants. Importantly, the technique remains under study and needs more trials.
Methods being researched
- Using the skin’s outer layer (dermis) — the most common and fastest approach.
- Cloning dermal papilla cells with compounds such as collagen.
- Combining papilla cells with follicles, where the papilla cells stimulate follicle and hair production.
- Growing hair alongside keratinocytes, which makes it easier to control the growth direction.
Potential benefits
- A possible solution for baldness that conventional transplants can’t address.
- A far larger supply of follicles for severe cases.
- Potentially better growth results than traditional transplantation.
- No anaesthesia needed to implant the cloned cells.
Who might it suit?
- People with severe shedding.
- Those unsuited to other transplants who lack enough stable follicles.
- Not suitable for people with a hereditary cancer risk or a personal history of any cancer, as a cell-growth risk remains.
The challenges
- Cell division is hard to control — cloned cells may become fibrous rather than follicles.
- It is difficult to choose the follicle most suited to cloning.
- There is a possible immune/allergic response to the cloned cells.
- The final look — colour, density, texture — is hard to predict.
Results and safety
Because cloning is still under study, real-world results are not yet clear. Research suggests cloned hair resembles natural hair when the cells come from the patient themselves. The US FDA has not approved hair cloning: there are concerns it could stimulate malignant cell growth or tumour formation, so more trials are required. For now, established options such as stem cell therapy or synthetic hair are used instead.
Cost
Cloning is more expensive than conventional transplants (FUE or implanter-pen techniques, which range from about USD 1,000 to 7,000 — and around USD 1,500 on average at Dr. Sherif Hegazy’s clinic). Cloning typically starts from about USD 6,000 and can climb to multiples of that.
