Double Chin Liposuction: The Technique to Remove Submental Fat

A double chin (submental fat) can persist despite weight loss, blurring the jawline. Liposuction removes it precisely for a defined, youthful profile. Here’s how it works, the non-surgical options, and what to expect.

Why a double chin forms

Fat accumulates under the chin from genetics, weight gain, ageing (with loss of skin firmness), and posture. It often stays even at a normal weight because it’s a stubborn, localised deposit.

The surgical technique: VASER liposuction

Under local anaesthetic, a tiny incision under the chin allows a fine cannula to remove the fat, while VASER ultrasound melts it gently and tightens the overlying skin — defining the jawline in a short procedure.

Steps

  1. The area is marked and local anaesthetic given.
  2. A tiny opening is made under the chin.
  3. Ultrasound liquefies the fat, which is gently suctioned.
  4. The opening is closed and a supportive garment applied.

Non-surgical options

For milder cases, non-surgical options include fat-dissolving injections, Endolift, and radiofrequency or cooling devices — less downtime, with more gradual results.

Preparation and recovery

  • Complete pre-op checks; stop smoking and blood thinners as directed.
  • Wear the supportive chin garment — key to skin retraction and shaping.
  • Take medication on time, eat well and limit salt.
  • Most people return to normal activity within a few days.

Results

Much of the result shows as swelling settles over the first weeks, with the best result — a defined jawline and tighter skin — over about 3 to 6 months, lasting for years with a stable weight.

Risks

Temporary swelling, bruising or numbness, and — rarely — infection or uneven results, all minimised by an experienced surgeon.
