Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) refreshes tired, heavy or puffy eyes by removing excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower lids. Here’s how it’s done in four steps, who it suits, and what it costs.
Types of eyelid surgery
- Upper blepharoplasty — removes excess skin (and sometimes fat) that hoods the upper lid.
- Lower blepharoplasty — treats under-eye bags and puffiness.
- Both together — for a full refresh.
Who is a candidate?
People bothered by drooping upper-lid skin, under-eye bags or a tired look, in good general health with realistic expectations. Heavy upper-lid skin that affects vision is also treated.
The 4 steps
- Anaesthesia — local (often with sedation) or general.
- Incision — hidden in the natural lid crease (upper) or just under the lashes / inside the lid (lower).
- Removing the excess — trimming excess skin and repositioning or removing fat.
- Tightening and closing — the lid is refined and closed with very fine stitches.
Recovery
Expect mild swelling and bruising for one to two weeks. Use cold compresses, keep the head elevated, avoid strain, and most people return to normal activity within about a week to ten days.
Results
The eyes look more open, rested and youthful once swelling settles, with results that last for years.
